Lassie is a fictionalized sable & white rough girl collie character who has been beloved for more than half a century and depicted in books, movies, cartoons, and television shows. The most famous Lassie parts have been in the movie “Lassie, Come Home”, her 1930s & 1940s adventures on the radio, and the 17 year television series “Lassie” which began it’s run in 1957.
The first Lassie was played by a collie male named “Pal”. There have been 9 generations of Pal’s decendants to play Lassie since, all of which have been male. It is said that Lassie was played by a male in the television series so that the children co-staring with him could grow up and Lassie would still look like a good sized dog in comparison (female collies are smaller than the male).
