Intro to Collie Standards (Kennel Clubs)
The collie is considered a “pure bred” dog, designed for a specific purpose. In order to earn titles, show, stud, etc, a purebred collie must have proof of registration with a dedicated kennel club who serves to monitor breed standards to ensure breeds stay true to their original look and purpose.
If you are in the USA, you have probably heard of the AKC, or “American Kennel Club”. That is not the only kennel around, however! Each kennel has what is known as a “standard”. A Standard is the set of prescribed characteristics a purebreed dog must have in accordence with his breed type. Kennels also have “groups” into which the breed is placed with other dogs. For instance, the Collie is part of the hearding group in the AKC.
