In the American Collie Standard, there are 4 recognized colors – only one of which looks like the typical “brownish” lassie color!  There’s the sable & white (the color Lassie was),  the blue merle (looks similar to the Australian Shepherd dog), the tricolor (black with markings of brown and white), and the white color (which is preferred to have some markings of one of the afore mentioned colors).  Shown below are 3 of the 4 American standard colors (white not shown) on the 3 rough collies.  Smooths also can be the same colors as the roughs.

    Is there accepted term as Sable Merle? My friend’s dog looks like my blue-merle but with Sable predominate.
