A lot can be said for the collie nose.
It’s big, strong, dominant, and sometimes downright cute. The nose provides health and fresh air. It holds up their elongated mouth, and stands proud in tribute to the breed. Some are striped, some are light brown, and (unfortunately) sometime pink. It accepts kisses with ease and is always there awaiting a scritch or two.
But the collie nose is much more useful than just for breathing. On the lush green hills where the sheep roamed hundreds of years ago, your collie’s ancestors used that precious nose to guide their charges. A few nips from that mouth below, and a glance from those beautiful brown eyes above was all it took to round up rouge sheep. You may have even experienced a few of those nips youself!
The nose is also useful for playing. A few balls thrown haphazardly is all it may take to get that collie nose (and the collie behind it!) off an running in unquestionable fun! Tennis balls, rubber balls, and even basketballs – the collie nose has touched them all. Nothing is quite as cute as watching a collie boot a basketball with the tip of that nose, as all effort is consentrated on getting it into a perfect position either back to you, his beloved owner, or into a hoop. And nothing is more fun than throwing a ball for him and seeing the lifeforce that is “collie” spring to life as he bounds away to catch his favorite toy.
So what about your collie? When is the last time you touched his head? Kissed his face… and payed attention to one of the most fabulous collie attributes – his nose?

I have my third rescue collie and I am deeplyin love with the breed and the dog. I have alway asked my collies, “Do you know why God gave collie long noses? It’s so they can handle all the kisses.” There is no nobler and more loving breed in this world!
Kathleen,
I agree – well said.
The breed is amazing.
